When the Latter-day Saints began practicing polygamy, that practice was not against the laws of the United States. However, opposition to polygamy arose and laws were passed against it. Rather than forsake their polygamous families, Latter-day Saint men tried to evade capture by the US Marshalls. Some of the men were successful in evading capture and some weren't. Those who weren't successful served time in the penitentiary for "conscience" sake. James Harvey Langford, Jr. was one of those who served time. He is the second person from the left.

This section of the site gives information about the Langfords (and related lines) who immigrated to Mexico, some because of polygamy and some to find work.
