2 CONC ws? Tip Langford swore he had a brother named Elza who was the baby of the family. I assume t
2 CONC he omission of his name is an oversight. And I can't think Tip would take two little girls in
2 CONC to his home after their father's death "just because." I'm sure Tip thought he had a brothe
2 CONC r named Elza whether the census enumerator did or not.

2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: Also of note is Richard Thomas Langford, the black servant in the household. I hav
2 CONC e a suspicion he's tied in some way to the switches and the kkk story I need to send you. Wha
2 CONC t was James H. Langford up to right after the War? Like father, like son, maybe? Rockcastle C
2 CONC ounty Langfords! Mixed race children were a common fact of life in the South in slave-holdin
2 CONC g families. It's possible this is the case here.

2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: There are two other names who are possible children of James H. & Mary A. Langford
2 CONC . One is D. B. Langford. If I had to guess what the "B" stands for, I would say Bethurum. O
2 CONC r maybe it was Benjamine. This might be the "Dock" who was Elza's brother rather than the mys
2 CONC terious "V. F." of the 1880 census. The other possible child is a daughter named Sarah. I mus
2 CONC t track those two down...someday. One possible connection concerning D. B. Langford and the o
2 CONC ther children of James H. concerns who he married. D. B. Langford married Eliza Lawrence 19 M
2 CONC ay 1898. John Lawrence was Elza's friend who was shot and killed by William Hunley.  Eliza an
2 CONC d John were brother and sister as far as I can tell at this point. I know these names are con
2 CONC fusing, but so are post Civil War feuds.

2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: John Lair reports the result of John Lawrence's murder this way in his book Rockca
2 CONC stle Recollections, (p. 71) : "Elzy [Elza's nickname] Langford, trouble-shooter for the Langf
2 CONC ord faction, sent Henley word to keep away from Brush Creek [where Elza was then living] in t
2 CONC he future. Declaring that no man could bluff him, Hunley, against the advice of Sigmon and fr
2 CONC iends, got on his horse and rode to Brush Creek. Within five minutes of his arrival he had be
2 CONC en shot and killed by Elzy Langford. During Elzy's trial at Mt. Vernon general firing broke o
2 CONC ut and Lafe King, ex-jailer of the county, was killed by Elzy supposedly accidentally. The ca
2 CONC se was sent for trial, but some sort of compromise was reached and no trial was ever held. Re
2 CONC cords show that nobody was ever called to account for any of these killings."

2 CONC , Paynes, Lawrences, Bethurums, etc.) shot or were shot at by Democrats (Mullinses, Clarks, H
2 CONC unleys, etc.). Election Day was always a huge event in Mt. Vernon even in the 1920's versio
2 CONC n of that town, the one my grandmother knew so well. Who might get shot by whom? People too
2 CONC k their politics seriously in Rockcastle County.

2 CONC e. The Mount Vernon Signal of July 31, 1908, reports that she died "yesterday," making her da
2 CONC te of death July 30, 1908. The obit reports that she was survived by three sons, Tip, Dock, a
2 CONC nd Elza, and by one daughter, Mrs. Monroe Singleton. Mary's surviving daughter might be  Bell
2 CONC adonna. Kentucky marriage records state that Belladonna Langford married William Sigman, 17
2 CONC , Sept., 1885. John Lair, who knew this family personally, says that "Donna" Langford marrie
2 CONC d Monroe Singleton. Perhaps the person who recorded the marriage got Sigman and Singleton con
2 CONC fused. He further states that Mary Singleton married Pink Langford. It could be that this "Pi
2 CONC nk" is the Pinkney who is Mary's son. If this is the case, brother and sister married a siste

2 CONC h a place. Within the year before her death in 1993, Mother took her back to Rockcastle to tr
2 CONC y and locate the site. Grandmom was only six at the time of Elza's death, and her sense of sp
2 CONC ecific directions 75 years after the fact not very clear. Unfortunately, they weren't success
2 CONC ful in locating the family graveyard. There could be lots of pioneer Langfords in that gravey
2 CONC ard, even the first Stephen Langford in Rockcastle County. It's a shame that Rockcastle doesn
2 CONC 't attempt to locate and preserve that site, and that I'm too far away to do any real hunting
2 CONC . Some natives of the area knew about an old burial ground "back there somewhere," but they s
2 CONC aid it was grown over with weeds and not accessible. Most probably it's now a part of some pr
2 CONC ivate property.

2 CONC ear 1865.. The Kentucky Death records at rootsweb lists his age as 79 at time of death, makin

2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: Shiron said that "after my grandmother and her sister were orphaned in 1920, Tip L
2 CONC angford took the two girls to raise. Grandmom grew up in the old Langford house in Mt. Verno
2 CONC n which has since been destroyed.

2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: Tip also had a daughter named Mary and another named Eliza. In reading the
2 CONT archive copies of the Signal I came across a notice that said that Tip
2 CONT Langford's son Eddie was very ill. Eddie must have died in childhood. I
2 CONT never knew of any son of Tip's named Eddie until I read that Signal notice.
2 CONT I wonder if my grandmother even knew that to be the case. I have to assume
2 CONT that Eddie really was "my" Tip's son because I haven't seen any reference
2 CONT for another Tip Langford in Rockcastle at this time. But with the Langfords,
2 CONT I guess anything is possible.

2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: I can probably get birth and death dates for Bob, Mary, and Eliza, if I dig
2 CONT on the net. In the 1880 census, Tip (James Stephen) is a 15 year old living
2 CONT with his mother. That puts his birth year at 1865. The Kentucky Death
2 CONT Records at Rootsweb, however, lists him as 79 at the time of death which
2 CONT would have made his birth in 1863 as his death date is 20 June 1942. I have
2 CONT on my list of things to do to get a copy of Tip's death certificate.
2 CONT 
2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: Tip married Dona Childers 19 Sept. 1888. She died 25 July 1950. Her age at
2 CONT death is listed as 81 making her birth year 1869. Her name really is "Dona,"
2 CONT not Donna. I absolutely must get Tip's death certificate as I can't read the
2 CONT mother's maiden name on Elza's certificate. My best guess is Mary Ann
2 CONT Davison. But that's really only a guess. I've had several people look at the
2 CONT handwriting. No one, so far, has been any better able to decipher it than
2 CONT the guess I've made. Maybe I'll have better luck when I have Tip's
2 CONT certificate in hand.

1 NOTE DEATH: I was nine years old when "Aunt Ina" died. She was only forty-two. But
2 CONT  few people have marked my life so deeply. She was diagnosed with
2 CONT  ovarian cancer when she was thirty-four years young and given six
2 CONT  months to live. But like a lot of Langfords, she was a fighter with an
2 CONT  almost immeasurable amount of grit. She also had a faith in God that
2 CONT  was overwhelming. Six months became eight less than pleasant years. She
2 CONT  was a beautiful, broken, and in may ways tragic woman, and I'm so
2 CONT  grateful that I got the chance for her to touch my life. 
2 CONT  
2 CONT  I can remember her sitting at the table with Grandmom, Mom, and me. I
2 CONT  must have been all of five, yet I can still hear that deep voice as
2 CONT  mahogany sounding as the color of her hair. She had one of those toothy
2 CONT  smiles that models covet, and a tiny black mole to the right of her
2 CONT  grin, the sort that people in the fifties paid good money to physicians
2 CONT  to create for them. Her's was a glamorous birthright that for some
2 CONT  reason appeared later in her life. She was lovely and mysterious to me,
2 CONT  forever surrounded by a blue haze from the cigarettes she kept close at
2 CONT  hand. I was being raised a good Baptist youngin.' The Baptists assured
2 CONT  me that ladies didn't cuss or chew, drink or smoke that evil weed. I
2 CONT  never heard or saw her do the first three evil acts. I did see her
2 CONT  smoke. But in spite of my moral education, I new at some deep level
2 CONT  that she wasn't going to bust hell wide open over the cigarettes. And I
2 CONT  would have taken on the whole Southern Baptist Convention if they tried
2 CONT  to say otherwise. Quite simply, I loved her, and "many waters can not
2 CONT  quench love." 
2 CONT  
2 CONT  She died in Indianapolis, Indiana. We were there with her at her apartment
2 CONT  the weekend before she died.  On Sunday morning, it was all too apparent
2 CONT  that she had to be  hospitalized. She and Uncle Phil lived in a second floor
2 CONT  apartment in an  old building with a central staircase that opened right into her
2 CONT  apartment. I don't know how I knew that this was the last time I would see
2 CONT  her alive. I just did. At the top of those stairs, Uncle Phil asked her if
2 CONT  she wanted him to carry her down. "No, indeed, I do not!" So with Uncle
2 CONT  Phil on one side and Grandmom on the other, she started down the stairs.
2 CONT  The rest of us hung on to the railing watching her leave. We were a mess.
2 CONT  We should have been as brave as she, but there were tears that wouldn't be
2 CONT  stopped. Aunt Ina took two steps down then stopped. She looked at the
2 CONT  place she was leaving, but more importantly she made a point to make eye
2 CONT  contact with each one of us for what seemed like forever. I'll never
2 CONT  forget her final words when finally she spoke.
2 CONT  
2 CONT  "Now, you all stop this nonsense. Stop it right now. I will never be far
2 CONT  from any of you. Never!"
2 CONT  
2 CONT  With that she started her journey down. I saw eighty pounds of raw faith
2 CONT  and courage navigate those stairs that day. It was one of those "defining
2 CONT  moments" in my young life. The following Tuesday, she died.
2 CONT 
2 CONT DEATH: My grandfather's name which is Louie Roger Steenbergen. He died in Louisville,
2 CONT Kentucky, January 31, 1997. Louis & Mary Steenbergen are buried in Evergreen
2 CONT Cemetery, Louisville, KY. Ina is buried near them in that same cemetery. Her
2 CONT surname at the time of death was Teagarden
